bakerR, it depends on where you are trying to work after school. as far as i know, all of the big4 do their recruiting on a regional basis. this isn't to say it's impossible to go to UT and work in NY or LA, but you will have to put in extra effort when it comes time for recruiting since all of the recruiters who do interviews will likely be from Houston and Dallas.

Let us know where you are planning on working after school and I can tell you some of the target schools in that area. Going to school in the region you want to work will certainly benefit you when it comes time for recruiting.

you mentioned "target schools". im currently looking to apply to some macc programs and would like to know which schools the big four consider to be their targets. i am currently going into my senior year at an accredited state university that certainly wouldnt be considered a target, but i have done very well so far and am looking into some top programs (UT, illinois etc.)

Dear Accounting Genius,

I came across your blog when searching for "how to get a job at Big 4" and found a lot of useful information. No matter regarding Big 4 or using towards other jobs.I wonder if I can ask your opinion on my situation.

My question is, how hard is it for a person looking for career change able to get a job at BIG 4? Most of your posts are directed torwards college students and not professionals working for a career change.

I've been working at a private company and have about 5 years experience in accounting, and operations. Recently passed the CPA exam.

My GPA was low when I was in college. And above that, English is my second language.

If it's impossible for me, I probably should use my energy torwards small accounting firms.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Is there any advantage making your resume one page when applying to the big 4 or is it better to go into detail and maybe fill 2 pages?

I agree with this fully, I tend to error on the side of caution and dress in very similar suits to what James Cagney wore in his 1953 movie "A rough Wind"

I just completed an internship with the big four during busy season and they do not lie about working long hours. However, I enjoyed the internship and will be taking a full time offer. It was tough working in the Big 4, but it did not even closely compare with my time spent sitting in concrete towers on guard duty in Iraq . Life is all about perception. Don't forget how much we have it made in this country. Elders tell me that people do not honor hard work anymore. I believe them.

I greatly appreciate the information. How long do you think someone should work at one of the Big Four before leaving? Should the individual leave after making Senior associate (2years), Manager (5 years)or stay even longer?

@B: If you do get that answer... then you must go slit your wrists! But seriously, most staff accountants are generally not dicks about this, and a lot of them will gladly do it if they actually think you're cool. However, if this does happen, don't dwell on the comment too much. Just go introduce yourself to the managers and partners. It's not the end of the world.

"... and politely ask [the staff accountants] if they could introduce you to a senior manager or partner."

What if they tell you that you're very capable of introducing yourself to the managers or partners?
